Worth the Splurge? Amika Nourishing Mask review

I received this as a sample in my May birchbox.  I was so excited when I saw this in the May box preview video. I was so glad when this came in my box!

What it Promises:

Birchbox Breakdown

It doesn’t matter how often you shampoo and condition—without a regular mask, your strands are bound to feel a bit neglected. Give them the extra attention they deserve with this deeply hydrating mask, which uses Obliphica oil to amp up shine, restore vibrancy, and even help repair split ends. You’ll notice the difference after just one use, and over time your hair will be visibly stronger and healthier.

How it Works

Sourced from rare sea buckthorn berries, Obliphica oil is a wonder ingredient rich in natural vitamins and omega acids that sink into each follicle, repairing any signs of heat and styling damage. Vitamin C adds brightness and shine. Plus, the formula is completely free of parabens and sulfates

What I found:

In the sample I received it came in a little packet with about two uses in it. Thank god! I feel like there should at least be two uses in every sample so you can actually sample the product!

It smells great! It's on the thick side is what I always want from a hair mask. The first time I used it I used it after washing my hair with my purple shampoo. It can be a bit drying since it's not sulfate free, so I always like to use a mask after it. My hair felt a little dry. I left the mask in for about 15 minutes (4 songs) the first time I tried it.

I used the rest of the sample a week later, after I washed my hair with sulfate-free shampoo. I left it in while I did a body scrub and shaved my legs, about 20 minutes (6 songs). After I washed it out, it felt like I put in a regular conditioner not a hair mask. The mask maybe thick, but I don't believe it did a good job repairing damage.

PROS:

  • Smells nice
  • Thick consistency
 CONS:

  • Does not feel like a deep conditioning mask.
  • Feels like I'm using a regular conditioner
  • Expensive
  • The brands site is extremely confusing to navigate. Not sure how to repurchase this item, other than through birchbox.
VERDICT: While it was great to get two uses out of this sample, this hair mask didn't work for me. Maybe someone with less damaged hair will like this more than me. Full size goes for $40. This is a pass for me.
